Tourism Trends 2009, Part 1 – Domestic Markets

This is the first of series of articles on Tourism trends 2009. Domestic Tourism and closer to home markets will be the key focus for many provinces, states and countries such as Ireland, Australia, Canada in 2009.  Expect shorter stays by travellers and travel closer to home.  Bookings are down for 2009, expect travellers to shop around for discounts or bargains before they book as well look for value added items. Those who travel longer and spend more money will be looking for unique experiences  Expect international travellers visits to be down as this trend has been identifed by many countries. 

The province of Nova Scotia plans to build on its strengths and go in promising markets like United Kingdom as well in closer markets, the Maritimes, and invest more in online marketing and social media.  PEI plans to market to its closer markets such as News Brunswick  and Nova Scotia.  Quebec City Tourism is increasing efforts in closer markets and niche markets,  international markets and sports tourism and invest more in online marketing.
