Here are my top ten early season (May – July) pleasant surprises in tourism. They are my own personal opinions and are not in order of importance.

1) The visitors are still coming despite high gas prices, less disposable income and other factors. Many tourism operators are on par with last year and some better.
2) Event tourism is playing a bigger role this year in attraction visitors to our area. Events such as Cabot  Trail Relay Run, Ride the Lobster, Lobsterpalooza, The Village of Baddeck 100th Anniversary Celebrations, Louisbourg Encampment, Hog Rally are making a big difference.
3) The importance of maps and GPS on websites is now a norm and is helping websites getting listed on the  first page of search engines.
4) The growth in Experiential Tourism and CTC Experiences Toolkit is helping small and medium size meet   the challenge of providing memorable experiences for their guests.
5) Cape Breton Island continues to receive accolades – Travel & Lesiure Magazine ranks our island #1 for Continental US and Canada and 10th in the World.
6) Two of Victoria County’s and CBHNP beaches – Black Brook and Ingonish Beach were rated in top 25 in Canada by Canadian Geographic Magazine
7)  The Cabot Trail ranked by Destination Canada -the Nordic Countries as one of Canada’s top ten attractions
8)  The NS Product Development Day showed what memorable experiences are all about when the participants learned to play drums and spoons as a group in 40 minutes.
9)  Joggins Fossil Cliffs becoming a  UNESCO World Heritage Site
10 ) Unique and different events becoming major attractions in 2008 – Ride the Lobster – World’s Longest Unicycle Race, Not Since Moses – Run and Walk around Five Islands at Low Tide, Louisbourg Encampment to name a few.

If you have any early surprises not listed above,  post your opinions in the comments section. I would like to hear them.
