Steven Lane, Development Officer, ECBC

Recently, I had the opportunity to listen to Steven Lane’s presentation on ECBC’s E-Commerce intitiative at Destination Cape Breton Association’s Annual General Meeting on December 7th in Sydney. Steven is the development officer at Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC). The program began in 2005 and its mandate was to make Cape Breton Island one of the leading destinations that allowed on-line booking for visitors. The program has been very succesful to date with 45 operators participating and is open to commerical and non-commercial enterprises.  The program allowed for consulting fees, hardware and software costs and training.

ECBC commissioned a report on this program which was completed in late 2006.  Clients were asked how satisified they were now that they had e-commerce on their website. On  a scale 1-5 with 5 being the highest, clients had a score of 4.2.  For very dollar ECBC and clients invested in e-commerce, they generated $50.00 in sales. The consultant indciated in the report,  27% of sales were generated with on-line booking in 2006 and it is expected to increase by 44% by 2011. The program is still available to the tourism industry on Cape Breton Island is cost-shared 50/50.
