Stats Canada Daily Newsletter - August 18th edition, released its report for the month of June, on“Travel between Canada and other Countries. It seems travel to Canada is down 12.7% from last year. Travel by Canadians outside the country is down .08% from last year, but the number of trips was up 8.8% from June 2007.
With the Canadian dollar so strong these days I would have thought more Canadians would have been travelling outside our country. Maybe they are not travelling because of the extra fuel surcharge when flying, extra baggage charge, the price of gas when driving or lack of discretionary income.
Today I checked the foreign exchange section of the Chronicle Herald newspaper and found a few interesting facts – New Zealand dollar is .74 cents to our dollar, the Australia dollar is worth 90.9 cents to our dollar, the English pound is 1.93.90 to our dollar. It was not that long ago when the pound was $2.18, New Zealand dollar 95cents and Australia dollar the same as our dollar. So this is a great time to buy money or traveller cheques if you are planning on a few trips in the next couple of years.
